Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Verde Valley Fire District responded to
several calls.
On Thanksgiving day the crews responded to residential call, where
smoke from an oven was filling the residence. The owner was trying to clean the oven
which caused the situation. The oven was turned off and the home was ventilated, without
any actual fire resulting.
Also on Thanksgiving day, at approximately 7:18 pm, crews were
dispatched to 55 S. Merritt Ranch
Road in Cornville for a wildland assignment, where they discovered
approximately a quarter acre fire involving heavy timber logs and trees along the
riverbank. Crews attacked the fire with a combination of water and foam. While the
fire was knocked down with a layer of foam, a unit was staged over night to knock down any
flair ups. Early the next morning the property manager had a backhoe on scene to spread
out the hot logs. Duty crews worked four or five hot spots with foam until the fire was
extinguished. All units went back into service by noon on the
27th. Cause of the fire is unknown at this point.
On Saturday, crews responded to the report of a possible car fire near
milepost 7.5 on Cornville Road. Upon arrival they found grass smoldering; however, the
vehicle was not involved. The driver had just noticed the fire under a guardrail and
called it in. Crews made sure the fire was completely extinguished.
On Monday morning, at approximately 10:14 am, crews responded to a
vehicle accident at Western Drive and Highway 260. Crews arrived to find two vehicles
involved in a head-on collision, with three patients sustaining substantial
injuries. Two patients were transported and treated at Verde Valley Medical Center, and
the third patient was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center.
